Upcoming Workshops

This workshop will help students to deepen their practice by first looking at and examining their zone of comfort. Which pictures are perhaps too easy and comfortable to make? What kinds of photos are the students not taking because the risk involved feels like it's too much? Some great photographers, such as André Kertész or Lee Friedlander, mostly remained within their zone of comfort throughout their careers. Others, such as Diane Arbus, overcame personal limitations (such as shyness) to photograph in situations where that must have felt risky. Finally, the workshop will ask questions about the need to photograph - which photographs are necessary for the photographer to seek out?

Students are asked to bring in two photographs that initially inspired them to go into photography and will have class critiques on their work.

‘I will make a presentation of my work as well as a speculative lecture on photographers' zones of comfort. Brief supplemental lectures may be given based on which topics arise in classroom discussions.’

Bio

Mark Steinmetz is an American/French photographer who currently resides outside of Paris. He has published several books with the Nazraeli Press (Paso Robles, CA): South Central, South East, Greater Atlanta, Summertime, Italia, The Ancient Tigers of my Neighborhood, Paris in my time, The Players, Summer Camp, ATL, France, 1987 and a three-volume set, Angel City West. Stanley/Barker (London) has published 15 Miles to K-ville, Past K-ville, Carnival and Rivers & Towns. Kominek Books (Berlin) released Berlin Pictures in 2021 and Taken from Light in 2025. Nazraeli released Chicago in February 2025, and a revised Summertime and Low Fi Cats in April 2026.

Steinmetz’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, La Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris), and others. He has taught photography at Harvard University, Yale University, Sarah Lawrence College, Emory University, and The University of Hartford MFA Program. Steinmetz is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe.

Steinmetz had one-person shows at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans) in 2015, and at the Yancey Richardson Gallery (New York) and Lothringer13 Halle (Munich) in 2017. His work on the Atlanta airport, Terminus, was shown at the High Museum of Art (Atlanta) in the spring of 2018, and he had large one-person shows at Fotohof in Salzburg, Austria in 2019, Murkudis Gallery, Berlin in 2022, and the Palac Schoena Muzeum in Sosnowiec, Poland in 2024. He had one-person shows at David Hill Gallery in London in 2025, and PGI in Tokyo in 2026.

  • Yes, individuals must be 18 or older for this workshop. 

  • There will be a 90% refund (10% service fee) for refunds 14 days before workshop. 

    50% refund on cancelations 7 days before workshop, and 0% refund less than 7 days before workshop. 

  • Refreshments and lunch will be provided for attendees. If you have severe food allergies, we recommend bringing something to eat. 

    We will do our best to provide for all. 

  • There is a parking lot just south of the building and an additional one east of the building. Parking is $15 (sometimes $25 if there is another event). 

    Please read street signs if you park on the street. 

  • The workshop is located in the Art Space on the 4th floor on the back side of the Center on 4. Please see map attached to locate space.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The Center on 4 workshops are intentionally limited in size to ensure meaningful creative exchange. Please review the following cancellation policy before registering.

Full tuition is due at the time of registration.

Participant Cancellations

  • More than 60 days before the experience: Full refund.

  • 30–60 days before the experience: 50% refund.

  • Less than 30 days before the experience: No refund.

Workshop Cancellation

Should The Center on 4 cancel a workshop due to force majeure, artist illness, insufficient enrollment, or other unforeseen circumstances beyond our reasonable control, participants will receive a full refund of all fees paid to The Center on 4. The Center on 4 is not responsible for airfare, accommodations, travel insurance, or any other expenses incurred outside of the workshop fee.

Registration & Payment

Registration is confirmed upon receipt of full payment unless otherwise stated. Enrollment is limited and spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participant Responsibility

Participants are responsible for ensuring they are physically able to participate in the workshop and for arriving with the appropriate equipment, documentation, and travel arrangements.

Participants are expected to conduct themselves with professionalism, respect, and consideration for fellow participants, artists, hosts, staff, and local communities. The Center on 4 reserves the right to remove any participant whose conduct is disruptive, unsafe, or inappropriate. No refund will be issued in such cases.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, The Center on 4, its artists, employees, contractors, partners, hosts, and venues shall not be liable for any injury, illness, accident, theft, loss, damage to personal property, travel delays, cancellations, or other expenses arising from participation in a workshop.

Governing Law

These Terms & Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California.
